In the UK, Tourism Libel is a term used in cases where a defendant charging someone with libel is either not from Britain, or the person charged with libel is not, or neither are from Britain. Although, the publication must have been released in Britain for the High Court to accept the case. The Lord Chancellor has set up a working group to review these cases in the media or other types of publication to ensure they are truly cases of libel.
One of the first cases of true ‘Tourism Libel’ can be traced back to Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1990 when he used the High Court to sue British author Wendy Leigh, when she used sensitive and unverified material in an unauthorized biography about Schwarzenegger. Continue reading
