Lake Under Siege

As the summer approaches, many Ontario residents will be visiting our Great Lake Ontario for recreation, but unbeknownst to these seasonal visitors the lake is under attack.

Lake Ontario is little brother to the four other Great Lakes that, together, make up 20% of the world’s fresh water supply. The lake borders many metropolitan cities like Toronto, Hamilton and Rochester. Not to mention countless communities and cottage countries.

“Thou dost in us command”…the original song?

Stephen Harper recommended the review of Canada’s National Anthem yesterday from “In all our sons command” to “Thou dost in us command”, the original line from Canada’s National Anthem; well, not really.

In 1908 Robert Weir penned this newer form of the national anthem that Canadians stand and sing to today, with the exception of “In all thy sons command”, Weir wrote, “Thou dost in us command”.

The first and original version of Canada’s anthem was written in French in 1880, by a patriotic French-Canadian named Sir Adolphe Basile Routhier. It was written for the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society. This version was then translated to English in 1906, two years before Weir wrote his version.

Locker Room Fight Club: No schizophrenic second personality here

A video obtained by the ‘Toronto Star’ has recently unfolded evidence of boxing in the locker room of a minor midget A hockey team.

This kind of behaviour has been banned by the Greater Toronto Hockey League, and was cracked down on almost three years ago, but as the video suggests, obviously the league didn’t come down hard enough. Most disturbing of all both coach and assistant coach of the team can be seen for a few seconds in the video watching on as the two 15-year-old boys pummel on each other wearing only helmets and gloves.

At one point one of the teens is hit so hard he actually stumbles backwards and has to brace himself against a wall. At this point it appears one of the coaches steps in saying ‘okay it’s over’, and the last few seconds of the video show one of the other players playfully jumping on the coach.
